Giant Panda's Second Cub is Stillborn at National Zoo

First cub, born Friday, apparently healthy.

Little more than a day after the National Zoo's giant panda gave birth to a squealing, apparently healthy cub, the new mother gave birth to a second cub Saturday that was stillborn.

The mother, Mei Xiang, had groomed the new cub until it fell from her body onto the floor of the den, lifeless, The Washington Post reported.

The first cub, born Friday, “continues to do well,” a zoo spokeswoman told the Post.
