NFL and Redskins Expert Speaking at Nike Store Thursday

Charley Casserly will speak at the November Citizens Association of Georgetown Meeting at the new M Street Nike store.

Georgetown resident Charley Casserly will be the featured speaker at Citizens Association of Georgetown meeting Thursday at the new Nike flagship store at 3040 M St., NW. Casserly is a 24-year NFL executive and a 16-year veteran NFL General Manager.

The Nike store opened in October, taking over the space previously occupied by Barnes and Noble. This is Nike's first flagship store in the DC area.

According to the event notice, Casserly's biography includes:

  • 4 Super Bowl appearances with the Redskins, winning 3 of them
  • Discovered Joe Jacoby and Jeff Bostic as a scout and converted Brian Mitchell into a running back/kick returner who led the league in combined net yards 
  • 1987: organized the Redskins' "replacement" team during the NFL strike - the Warner Bros. feature film "The Replacements" featuring Keanu Reeves and Gene Hackman is based on this group
  • 1989: elevated to General Manager of the Redskins 
  • 1999: named NFL Executive of the Year at mid-season by Sports Illustrated, Pro Football Weekly, The Sporting News, and USA Today 
  • Named General Manager of the Houston Texans in 1999 and drafted multiple Rookie of the Year and Pro Bowl players

The "tailgate" reception begins at 7 p.m. with catering provided by Safeway. The program "Kick-Off" is at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
