NWS Issues Flash Flood Watch Thursday for DC Metro Area

Northern Virginia and DC are under a Flash Flood Watch beginning at 1 p.m. Thursday.

The storms that hit the region overnight aren't over. The National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Watch for much of DC and Northern Virginia Thursday morning, stating that "tropical moisture will remain over the area through most of tonight."

The Flash Flood Watch is in effect for DC and all cities and counties in Northern Virginia from 1 p.m. Thursday to late Thursday night.

Thunderstorms late Thursday afternoon and evening may cause torrential downpours that could lead to flash flooding in the watch areas, the weather service reported.

Rainfall rates may exceed 2 inches per hour, causing a rapid rise in water in low-lying areas; officials remind drivers if they see standing water to turn around—don't drown.

Damaging wind gusts and large hail are possible as well, the weather service reported.
