DC Under Tornado Watch Until 9 PM

Some storms could turn severe with damaging winds and/or hail in addition to heavy downpours that could affect the afternoon commute, according to The Capital Weather Gang.

UPDATE, 3 p.m.: The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for DC.

The watch is in effect until 9 p.m. 

The watch includes the entire metro area including Northern Virginia and the Maryland suburbs.

"We could see some unstable conditions today, bringing some severe weather to the area," said Jacqui Jeras, ABC-7 meteorologist, during an afternoon weather report.

"Today’s air mass is extremely unstable, which means some storms could turn severe with damaging winds and/or hail in addition to heavy downpours that could affect the afternoon commute," The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang says.

The National Weather Service notes that showers and thunderstorms are likely, mainly after 3 p.m. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain, according to the forecast. 

The chance of precipitation is 60 percent.
