Rush Hour Chaos: Bomb Threat Causes Georgetown Street Closures

The full story and commuters' reactions on social media as the shutdowns happened.

Georgetown streets closed for hours leading up to the evening rush hour on Thursday after a bomb threat was made to the Swedish Embassy, the Metropolitan Police Department said.

The threat caused police to close K Street, 27th Street, Rock Creek Parkway and several other streets near the embassy.

Georgetown traffic was significantly delayed, and traffic control officers had to assist pedestrians and guide traffic at Wisconsin Avenue and M Street, N.W., police said.

A message saying that a bomb was already in the building was left on the embassy switchboard, a WTOP report said.

WikiLeaks tweeted that Swedish media said the bomb threat had to do with Julian Assange.

The building was cleared while embassy officials checked each room of the building, the WTOP report said.
