Community Corner

New Names on or Near Book Hill

The constant of Georgetown retail is change.

Georgetown is a pedestrian-friendly community despite the odd cobblestone or turning car.  Being at street level means you can see all the comings and goings and changes that combine to give the Georgetown neighborhood its character and village feel.

is the upper part of Wisconsin Avenue between the and P Street. It is a series of small shops and restaurants that are unique and colorful. This area always seems to be in flux. For example:

Capital Teas has just opened in the courtyard space that was formerly Birdy Club at 1614-A Wisconsin Avenue., which was formerly Presse Books. Capital Teas is a lovely little shop sells unique teas and tea supplies. The store also has locations in Annapolis, Bethesda and National Harbor.

Across the street right next to is the new Mid-town cafe at 1639 Wisconsin Ave. The cafe has not officially opened but the menu and layout looks great. They will be serving breakfast and dinner with a Mediterranean flair. Dinner entrees are about $15-20. They are just waiting for final licensing so keep an eye on them.

Further down the hill at 1500 Wisconsin Avenue the former Claude Taylor Travel Photography is now a no-name men's clothing store. Literally. This change seemed to happen over a weekend.

And finally, more change is on the horizon on this part of Wisconsin Avenue. The old clothing store at 1334 Wisconsin was being cleared out today. Around the corner on O Street at 3216 O there are permits posted for a restaurant. And finally, the site of is now a staging area for something with a big German Shepherd standing guard inside.

In Georgetown, when a door shuts, a window seems to open.
