Thanksgiving Storm Turns To Snow

Advice on holiday commuting in cold, stormy weather, and ways to prep for more snow to come.

Tuesday's storm could turn into snow today, according to the National Weather Service. The agency predicted snow in the afternoon with a slight chance of snow in the evening.

ABC Weather Team's Doug Hill warned that the weather could worsen Thanksgiving traffic today and tomorrow, and that if you are headed toward Pennsylvania, New York or New England, heavy snow should be expected.

And if you were dreaming of a white Christmas, it's time to start planning for snow a little sooner.

The DC Snow Team, a collaboration of both departments, encourages residents in each neighborhood to form snow-shoveling teams to assist one another in clearing sidewalks within 24 hours of snowfall.

“While our last two winters produced less than four inches of snow between them, we do remember the winter of 2009-2010,” said DPW Director William Howland in a news release. “Anyone who endured two back-to-back blizzards in February 2010 knows that having help shoveling snow makes the job a lot easier.”

Serve DC will organize volunteers to clear sidewalks for elderly and disabled residents. But the group could use more volunteers, said Terry Bellamy, Department of Transportation director, in the release.

“Even a dusting of snow can be too much for elderly or disabled residents to shovel,” he said.

In Glover Park, neighbors have been helping those who are physically unable to shovel for nearly two years, and strives to continue making the season easier for those in need, including people temporarily suffering from an injury or illness.

The team asks that anyone who needs assistance, knows someone in need or wants to volunteer, reach out by emailing GloverParkTeam@gmail.com.
