Storm Could Get Icy in Georgetown

Heavier snow and ice expected in Georgetown.

The National Weather Service announced Friday that the rain storm in Washington, D.C., could turn to snow and freezing rain on Sunday.

The service issued a Winter Storm Watch that will last from Sunday morning to Monday morning.

Snow and ice is expected to be on the higher side in Georgetown, the National Weather Service said.

"Hazardous travel is probable due to slick roads and icy conditions on Sunday, and possibly into Monday," the service said.

And "increased power outages are possible from ice accumulating on tree limbs and power lines," it said.

The service advised staying in touch with media for updates because the forecast might change before Sunday.

Here are the National Weather Service's current forecasts:

Snow and sleet will change over to freezing
rain on Sunday afternoon.  Freezing rain is expected to last until
late Sunday night or Monday morning before changing over to rain.

1 to 2 inches of snow and sleet, and a quarter
inch or more of ice accumulation is possible.

Snow and sleet are expected to begin Sunday morning.
A changeover to freezing rain is expected midday Sunday and will
continue into the night before changing over to rain late Sunday
night or Monday morning.

The temperature is expected to hover around 30
degrees throughout the event.

Winds:  Light - 0-10 mph, mostly from the north.
