inDepth Jazz presents The New Orleans Connection: The Funky Roots of Jazz
New Orleans jazz styles can be challenging. Even advanced players can find it difficult to play correctly. That's why the great Wynton Marsalis has dedicated decades to exploring its roots in the music of Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton and others.
New Orleans jazz informs all of the modern playing you will do in the future. If you want to be a competent and happening jazz musician, you'll want to take this on. Luckily, it's fun to play!
Revisit spirituals like "Just a Closer Walk With Thee." This raw material became part of the parade tradition for the earliest jazz cats. Move on to the complex Dixieland Blues tune "Royal Garden Blues" and get a whole new respect for the genre! We'll touch on parade traditions, Dixieland and Ragtime and take you up to the modern style of The Meters with "Cissy Strut."
