Obamas Attend MLK Celebration at Kennedy Center

The annual 'Let Freedom Ring Celebration' at the Kennedy Center included an award for former Martin Luther King, Jr. speechwriter, Clarence Jones.

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle attended the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration hosted by Georgetown University and the Kennedy Center Monday evening. The event was free for the audience of some 2,400 people.

According to university officials who attended the event, the Obamas were greeted with a standing ovation by the audience and departed to chants of "four more years."

The "Let Freedom Ring Celebration" featured performances by vocalist Bobby McFerrin and the Let Freedom Ring Choir, which is made up of Georgetown University faculty, students and D.C. residents.

The University presented Clarence Jones—a scholar known in part for his role as an assistant speechwriter for King's “I Have a Dream” speech—with the 2012 John Thompson Jr. Legacy of a Dream Award.
