Tudor Place to hold Fourth of July Weekend Events

An ice cream social and tea for families will help celebrate Independence Day and educate children about a founding family.

This weekend families will be able to celebrate Independence Day while remembering American history at Tudor Place Historic House and Garden.

On Friday, July 1, Tudor Place will host an Ice Cream Social from 1-3 p.m. On Saturday, July 2, they will be holding a Tea for families beginning at 1 p.m.

“Both George and Martha had strong ties to Tudor Place and, of course, played a critical role in our nation’s bid for independence, and we felt that providing the public with interactive programs that engage children of all ages would be a wonderful way to celebrate our nations independence,” said Education Director Talia Mosconi.

At the Ice Cream social, participants can expect not only a cold treat on a hot day, but also a tour of the house, early American games and a chance for children to create their own flags, Mosconi said.

The tea will be something out of early America, as children can dress in costumes and the ceremony will be led by a Martha Washington impersonator.

“Both events are a great way for the local community to visit a local historic site to learn about two of our nation’s most revered hero and heroine. Tudor Place is really part of the fabric of Georgetown, and Georgetown—as one of America’s earliest and once busiest ports—is a key piece of the early American story,” Mosconi said.

They chose to host activities on the weekend, rather than the actual Fourth of July in the hope of appealing to more families, Mosconi said.

Tudor Place was the home of Martha Washington’s granddaughter and of six generations of descendants of the family.

“With Tudor Place’s strong connection to George and Martha Washington we thought it would be a perfect place for families to celebrate Independence Day and learn more about one of our founding families,” Mosconi said.

Each of these two events costs money to attend. For the ice cream social: member children are $5, non-member children are $10 and adults are $5. For the tea: member children are $20, non-member children are $25, and adults are $10.

Proceeds from these events will go to the preservation of the house and its contents, Mosconi said.

Some of the artifacts that Tudor Place will be highlighting during their Fourth of July weekend activities include a Revolutionary War camp stool and a 1775 letter from George to Martha Washington, one of only three George Washington letters written to Martha still in existence.

“It’s a great way for children to learn about our one of our founding families.  It’s also a chance for them to see and roam through one of the region’s most lovely gardens and, on our sloping South Lawn, enjoy views and green expanses you don’t often find in busy city neighborhoods,” Mosconi said.
