Evermay Hosts 2013 Overtures Summer Series

The series will include seven concerts between July and September.

The Evermay Estate will once again play host to the S&R Foundation's Overtures Summer Concert Series. The series of performances from world class musicians begins July 19 and runs through September 27.

“We’re overjoyed by the D.C. community’s enthusiasm for Overtures, which provides music lovers an evening of relaxation and an opportunity to experience compositions in an intimate setting,” Dr. Sachiko Kuno, president and CEO of the S&R Foundation, said in a press release. “This summer we invite a new group of musicians to the summer series, while also welcoming back favorites like Evermay’s artist in residence, Ryo Yanagitani.”

The series' popularity last year led to both a winter holiday and a spring series, creating a high demand for the historic estate in northeast Georgetown.

As part of an agreement to allow the home to become a non-profit, the owners promised to limit the number of events because of potential impacts on neighboring homes and streets.

To reduce some of the demand on Evermay and its neighbors, owners Drs. Sachiko Kuno and Ryuji Ueno are now seeking a zoning exception for their other historic Georgetown property, Halcyon House at 3410 Prospect St. NW, for a non-profit.

"The owners ... wanted to use Halcyon House for the expansion of the programs and to help meet some of the demands that had been placed on Evermay," Attorney Alice Haase told the Georgetown Advisory Neighborhood Commission at its July meeting.

While the future of Halcyon House is still in limbo, the S&R Foundation is moving ahead with its programs at Evermay.
