BID Appoints Eastbanc VP as New CEO

Joe Sternlieb will take over the role vacated by Jim Bracco in July.

Joe Sternlieb will take over the helm as Chief Executive Officer of the Georgetown Business Improvement District (BID) in October, the BID announced Thursday. The former CEO, Jim Bracco, resigned in July.

Sternlieb is currently a vice president of acquisitions at EastBanc, Inc., which he joined in 2006. From 1997-2006 he served as the deputy director for the Downtown BID.

"The Georgetown BID is moving in an exciting direction to help ensure the continued success of the neighborhood as a vibrant local community and international destination," said Crystal Sullivan, president of the Georgetown BID, in a press release.

In the press release, the BID provided details on Sternlieb's background and track record:

Sternlieb has demonstrated a breadth of experience in city planning and is very knowledgeable about the Washington, DC community, having worked in the city for over 20 years. A graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Master's Degree in City Planning, Sternlieb most recently served as VP of Acquisitions for one of Washington's premier mixed-use development firms, EastBanc. Before that, he served for almost 10 years as Deputy Director of the Downtown DC BID, the nation's third largest, leading a variety of major civic projects including the DC Circulator system.  Prior to his leadership role at Downtown DC, Joe was Staff Director of the DC Council Committee on Economic Development where he shepherded the BID enabling legislation through the City Council.   He currently serves on the board of several civic organizations including the DC Building Industry Association, DC Surface Transit Inc. and DC Vote.

Sternlieb said that leading the BID is the perfect gig for a city planner such as himself.

"Georgetown is one of the greatest mixed-use neighborhoods in the nation. Still, it faces the challenges of access and mobility; competition from revitalizing city neighborhoods; addressing 21st century environmental issues; and the need to realize its full potential as an employment center, retail destination and waterfront community. This is an exciting time for Georgetown and the District and I am really looking forward to getting started."
