Yvette Prather, 55, tries on boots at the new DSW in Friendship Heights on its official opening day, Oct. 25. On one foot is a black Sam & Libby boot; on the other, a black Diba boot. The newest DSW is fully stocked with a variety of sizes that allowed Prather to try on a wide range of shoes. Convenience also factored into her visit—she works at nearby Nieman Marcus.
“I heard [DSW was] coming two months ago, and I got really excited,” Prather said. She added that the store “brings variety” to Friendship Heights.
The DSW, at 5333 Wisconsin Ave. NW in Washington, DC, occupies the former Borders bookstore. A sign had been posted in its window since June to advertise this new location. DSW takes advantage of the spacious location and has stocked women’s casual, fitness, and dress shoes, along with accessories, on the first floor. Women’s boots, along with men’s shoes and all clearance shoes, occupy the second floor.
Best friends Kara Clunk, 27, and Kristina Ortiz, 31, spent their weekly meetup examining the new store’s clearance area, stocked with a variety of styles and sizes of shoes.
“DSW is my [absolute] favorite store in the world,” Clunck said, as she tried on a pair of turquoise heels. “I adore shoes, and DSW has a wide selection with reasonable prices.”
Ortiz agrees, although she had yet to find a pair of shoes to buy. She does see them both shopping at DSW more frequently since both work nearby.
“Unfortunately, this will become my lunchtime stop,” Ortiz said.
A self-described “shoe fanatic,” Jessica Roper, 26, left DSW with two pairs of pumps and a pair of sneakers, and because she shopped on DSW’s official opening day, the shoes were packed into a free tote given to those who made a purchase that day. Roper adds these shoes to the pair she purchased on Oct. 23, when the store had a soft opening.
Sheila Leifer, who works at Long and Foster, came just to look at the new store but walked away with three pairs of shoes. She appreciated the friendly and helpful staff, and likes that there are now more options for shoe lovers in Chevy Chase.
