Georgetown Park Businesses Asked to Vacate

The mall is clearing out, one by one.

Though mall manager Vornado Realty remains mum on its plans for the Georgetown Park mall, residents are grumbling and talking as their leases are not renewed and they receive notice to clear out by year's end. Even the Georgetown Angels, who set out to revamp the image of the mall, are all leaving.

At the July Advisory Neighborhood Commission meeting, representatives from Vornado talked about their plans to upgrade the appearance of the mall. They were specifically requesting to update the entrance on M Street near We're not sure who it is, but in our entire thinking, we're looking at taking the entire lower level and turning into one retailer..." and that retailer will "need an M Street presence."

DCMud added more fuel to the rumor fire about a Target coming to Georgetown in an article yesterday:

"Although property owner and operator, Vornado Trust Realty, would not confirm an 80,000-s.f. lease with Target, officials from the giant retailer have been exploring the viability of a large retail site with concerns about the traffic-choked location."

Kassie Rempel, Heidi Kallett and Stephanie Fornash Kennedy, who make up the Georgetown Angels, all received notice to leave by year's end, according to DCMud. The Georgetown Dish reports that several foodcourt level shops were given less notice- they have to clear out by mid-September.

Rempel owns a shoe store, SimplySoles; Kallet owns a stationery and gift shop, The Dandelion Patch; and Fornash Kennedy owns a boutique clothing and jewelry store, Fornash. All three shops are located on the second level of mall on M Street.

"It's unfortunate, but I can't say it's a surprise," Rempel told DCMud.

While I do think that Georgetown Park needs to be revitalized, I truly hate that retailers aren't given any option of staying. Does this include street-level stores with back entrances into the mall, like Anthropologie, J. Crew, Clyde's, etc?

Right now it looks like it's mostly stores on the interior of the mall on the lower levels. We will keep you posted if we hear about any other retailers moving out!
