GU Considers Renting Graduate Student Housing in Rosslyn

Georgetown University does not currently provide housing for graduate students.

A new building under construction in Rosslyn could help Georgetown University meet demand for housing among graduate students, according to The Washington Business Journal.

One building under consideration for additional housing is The JBG Co's. Slate building, a 203-unit residential structure at 1524 Clarendon Blvd. in Arlington, according to the Business Journal.

The Slate building is part of a large residential and retail development, approved in 2008, to include 400 market-rate and 54 affordable apartment units along with 25 townhouses and as much as 10,000 square feet of retail, according to the Rosslyn Business Improvement District website.

Georgetown already provides shuttle transportation between its Northwest DC campus and the Rosslyn Metro and other points in Arlington. Many students live in private apartments in Rosslyn and commute to the schoool either via bike, shuttle or by walking across the Key Bridge.

Though the Slate is conveniently located, the University has not finalized the location for new graduate housing, university spokeswoman Rachel Pugh told the business journal.

According to The Washington Business Journal, "The university has not made any firm decisions, but is leaning toward Slate for several reasons, including its location just across the Potomac River from Georgetown, Pugh said. The university would lease, rather than buy, space at Slate under that option."

While GU is exploring housing options off-campus for graduate students, it recently initiated a campus master planning process to create a more residentially-focused main campus for undergraduate students.

The master planning team identified seven potential sites on the current campus for student housing where it hopes to accommodate 450 more students in the short-term and a total of 700 more students in the long-term. These new developments would put the university on the path to meet the requirements set forth in the most recent campus plan agreement.
