New Georgetown H&M First to Sell Home Goods in U.S.

The new H&M in Georgetown aims to be the "flagship" store in the region with multiple departments, including the first ever home section in the U.S.

As the doors of Georgetown's original H&M closed this morning, a long line formed outside the new location, just down the block.

The new H&M, still holding the 3222 M St. NW address, opened Nov.12 as the first U.S. store to carry the company's home products, said an H&M expansion team employee. That includes items for the living room, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom.

"I hope it will be good," the expansion team employee said. "The products are really good quality."

H&M has sold its home line in Europe since 2009, and has expanded to two locations outside Europe: Mexico City and Georgetown. H&M products are the same in all stores, the expansion team employee said.

A local store clerk said the new store is more "full concept" than the old one was with a women's, men's, kids, plus size and home department.

"We're looking to be the flagship in the area," the clerk said.

Kim Zepeda lives near Georgetown and shopped the old store frequently. The old store was small and couldn't compete with the large layout of the Chinatown H&M, she said.

"The new one is so much bigger," she said. "I like that it has the other departments."

What do you think about the new store?
