Skating Rink at the Georgetown Waterfront?

MRP Realty is reportedly considering having an ice skating rink at the Washington Harbour complex during winter months

The Washington Harbour at the Georgetown waterfront could be the home of an 11,000-square-foot, outdoor skating rink during the cold winter months, says owners MRP Realty in an article in the Washington Post.

The skating rink would be part of the proposed makeover of the entire complex at the Georgetown waterfront. The rink would cover a space that in the summer months would be a fountain, offering a similar aesthic to the one currently in place.

MRP's Robert Murphy told the Post, that the rink was an idea dependent on community support.

“We were really only interested in moving forward if there was a strong positive reception and to date that’s what we’ve seen.”

Monday, Commissioner Bill Starrels, whose single member district includes the Harbour, told Patch that while the developer, property managers and tenants were "having a lot of dialogue back and forth" about the plan, the skating rink is not a done deal.

"I don’t think there was consensus on the rink," said Starrels.

At the February Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC2E) meeting, a team from MRP Realty presented plans for renovations of the existing storefronts, planters, light fixtures, and the fountain.

After hearing the plans, the ANC stated that it would prefer that no action be taken at this time on the fountain- there was no mention of an outdoor rink during that presentation. Starrels also advised the developers to consult the condo board for the residential space at the waterfront.

In the Washington Post article, the developer was cautious about discussing plans for the complex since they are still being reviewed by neighbors.

Starrels said "In general, both sides would like to upgrade a lot of the public space for the harbour," but that the specifics still have to be worked out in additional meetings.

Though agenda for the next ANC meeting on August 29 is not yet available online, Starrels said he anticipates the plan coming before the ANC and being on the Old Georgetown Board agenda as well.
