Small Virginia park leads in nationwide "favorite park" contest

As of Thursday evening, Mason Neck State Park--only 30 minutes from Georgetown--had 78,021 votes, while 2nd place Veterans Memorial Park in Moore, OK had 76,947, and 3rd place Thompson Park in East Liverpool, OH had 62,286.

First place is worth $100,000! Second is $50,000 and third is $25,000. The contest is sponsored by Coca Cola and runs from June 6 through July 14.

Why is MNSP doing so well, when it's among the smaller of Virginia's 35 state parks and almost got closed in the 2010 budget crunch?

The answer is a lot of hard work by the "Gang of Six"--six dedicated, talented  people who don't even live on Mason Neck, or Fairfax County. Three of them don't even live in Virginia (two from Pennsylvania, one from Iowa!). But they love the park and have been promoting it for the last three years.

So get on the bandwagon and register to vote at:
https://parks.livepositively.com/parks/index.html#/

You can cast one vote a day there, through July 14.

You will also see links to FourSquare.com, where you can cast five votes a day, and a link to MapMyFitness.com, where you can cast ten votes a day and do it retroactively back to June 6. The catch for the latter is that you have to do at least 20 minutes of fitness activity each day, but almost anything counts, even just going for a walk.

If you have any questions or any difficulty in registering or voting at any of the three sites, just send an email to voteforwildlife@gmail.com and someone from the Gang of Six will help you out.
