Celebrating Memorial Day Nearby

Check out a few great events nearby and downtown to celebrate the holiday.

If you are looking to be patriotic in the old-school way (unlike the new-school way: shopping) then here are a few local activities for your day.

Memorial Day in Logan Circle Park: May 30, 11 a.m. to noon. The Logan Circle Community Association (LCCA), the National Park Service, and the Illinois State Society of DC for the will hold their annual Memorial Day observancein Logan Circle Park The event features a Color Guard, patriotic music, a re-enactment of the reading of the General No. 11 legislation establishing Decoration Day (which eventually became Memorial Day) and more.

National Memorial Day Observace to Honor America's Fallen Service Members: Arlington National Cemetery, May 30 at 11 a.m. Attendees are encouraged to be at the Tomb of the Unknowns or seated in the amphitheater by 9:30 a.m. Full Honor Wreath-Laying Ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Tomb of the Unknowns, to be followed by an observance program hosted by the Department of Defense in Arlington’s Memorial Amphitheater. A prelude by the U.S. Marine Band will begin in the amphitheater at 10:30 a.m.

National Memorial Day Parade: May 30, 2 p.m. The parade runs along the National Mall, beginning at Constitution Avenue and 7th Streets, NW and moving west down Constitution, past the White House, ending at 17th Street. The parade includes nearly 200 elements, including marching bands, active duty and retired military units, youth groups, and parade floats—as well as hundreds of veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.
