Overall across the United States, bicycle commuting grew 47 percent between 2000 and 2010, according to the League of American Bicyclists. But in DC, the growth rate was a whopping 315 percent.

"Here in Georgetown we are at the hub, between the wonderful Capital Crescent Trail, the Potomac Parkway trail, the Rock Creek trail, near the L Street cycle track," Jonathon Kass, the BID’s Transportation Director, said to a group of cyclists on Bike to Work Day Friday.

On this year's Bike to Work Day, more than 14,500 commuters participated, the most since the first regional Bike to Work Day was held in the Washington metropolitan region in 2000.

“The dramatic growth of the Bike to Work Day event is an indicator that area commuters view bicycling as a viable commute alternative that can enhance their daily routine,” said Nicholas Ramfos, Director of Commuter Connections in a press release.
