Dupont Metro South Entrance Closes Wednesday

The south entrance at 19th Street near Connecticut Avenue will be closed through October for repairs.

Enjoy your ride on the escalator at Dupont Circle's south entrance Tuesday, it will be your last until October. Feb. 1, Metro will close the south entrance to the red line metro station at 19th Street to repair three escalators that date back to 1997.

"The existing escalators, each 188 feet long and rising 85 feet to street level, are among the least reliable and most difficult to maintain of Metro's 588 escalators," according to a press release from Metro. The escalators were custom-made for the narrow entrance and the company that made them has long-since gone out of business, making it difficult to find replacement parts.

Metro will remove all three escalators and rework the area to install standard-sized escalators.

While the north entrance will remain open, the transit agency warns customers that in the event of overcrowding, transit police may close the entrance for safety reasons and trains may bi-pass the station until crowds dissipate. Metro advises riders to use Farragut North or other means of public transit during such disruptions.

Metro has created a website for the project: wmata.com/dupont.
