Editor's Notebook: Muth Fit for Trial, Bridge Completion Delayed and Hardy Principal Interview

A look at a few of the most notable stories this week on Georgetown Patch.

Two experts hired by the prosecution in the Georgetown Viola Drath murder trial both concluded that Albrecht Muth, who is charged with first degree murder, is competent to stand trial. In one doctor's opinion, he stated that Muth has been feigning being delusional to avoid prosecution, calling him a "con man." Also the doctors' reports reveal that while in D.C. jail Muth wrote a 250-page document entitled, "Judgement at Washington, Triumph of Illusion: a Journal of Life in DC Jail."

The third bridge of the Three Bridges Project will likely be finished by October. Complications with the many utilities that run undre the bridge caused the setback. The 29th Street Bridge was closed to traffic on Feb. 17, 2011.

Mary Stefanus began her second year as principal at the Georgetown middle school this week. She tells Patch in an interview that she thinks that school has moved past its "rocky period."

She called on local parents to enroll their children at for middle school. "If you want your school to be good, then as a parent, you do your part," she said.

Unfortunately, a bunch of Hardy kids went over to Safeway after school last week and shoplifted handfulls of food in a "flash mob," ran out past the security guard who couldn't do anything. I guess you could call this a "discipline" problem, one that a principal will be hard-pressed to change. And at the same time, she's making a public statement that parents should enroll their kids at Hardy if they want it to be a better school -- but why in the world would local parents want to send their kids to a school with such problems?
