Five Things to Remember for the MLK Holiday

Closures and special happenings for the federal holiday.

As volunteers gather throughout the city for a day of service on the holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., remember that many government agencies and services will closed or operating on adjusted schedules.

1. The Washington National Cathedral is offering a free concert, “King In Our Midst,” a celebration of service, song and spoken word from 2 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16. Visitors and Washingtonians are invited to attend and are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item or a new children’s book that will benefit D.C. charities.

2. The D.C. Department of Public Works will suspend trash and recycling collections, street and alley cleaning, and parking enforcement. Monday and Thursday collections will be made Tuesday and Friday, and Tuesday and Friday collections will be made Wednesday and Saturday.

3. The is closed. But, you can always return your books in the drop box by the front door.

4. All D.C. Department of Motor Vehicle locations, including the Georgetown branch, will be closed for the MLK holiday. Service centers, the vehicle inspection station, and adjudication services will re-open with regular business hours on Jan. 17.

5. Metro will open at 5 a.m., but will continue its track work, impacting rail service. Buses will operate on an adjusted Saturday schedule. Check the agency website for all service impacts.
