Flood Gates Up at Georgetown Waterfront in Anticipation of Abnormally High Tides

The National Weather Service issued a coastal flood warning for the D.C. area including the Washington Harbour in Georgetown.

The Georgetown Waterfront was empty save for a few ducks Wednesday morning. Period of rain over the past few days have prompted the National Weather Service (NWS) to issue a Coastal Flood Warning for D.C. last night through Friday at 6 p.m. The NWS now estimates that the Potomac levels will rise above the flooding point at the Georgetown Harbour.

The river was about a foot beneath the boardwalk at the Georgetown waterfront Wednesday around 11 a.m. The flood walls were raised in anticipation of possible flooding.

Tides are currently running 1.5 feet above normal and are expected to increase to 3-4 feet above normal within next one or two days. According to a DC Alert, the Wisconsin Avenue tidal gauge could exceed 8 feet and Washington Harbour will be threatened. The next high tides are 9:46 p.m. Wednesday and 9:57 a.m. Thursday.
