Update: Georgetown University Reports Loose Construction Materials Secured

The New Science Center's roof shingles and construction materials posed a threat to safety during Hurricane Irene.

After construction materials and roof shingles were reportedly loose at the site of the new science building, Georgetown University warned students over night to avoid the area.

In a statement Sunday morning, university officials wrote:

"We are thankful that the campus did not lose power and that no major structural damage was sustained. The loose materials at the New Science Center are now secured and all entrances to the Leavey Center are now open."

At approximately 11:55 p.m. on Saturday, August 27, 2011 HOYAlert sent via SMS: Georgetown University Operations Center receiving reports of damage to new science center construction site. If moving about campus, avoid the area.

D.C. Fire is responding to the construction site where large roof shingles are loose. There is concern that if wind increases they could become projectiles. Please avoid the area.

Georgetown University Emergency Operations Center is receiving reports of damage to the new science center construction site. The University is advising students and employees to avoid the area.

Update 12:44 a.m.

D.C. Fire and EMS is tweeting that roofing materials and other debris is flying. Authorities had set up an exclusion zone around building.

A building on the 3700 block of O Street had its roof collapse during Hurricane Irene. The building part of the Graduate Schoolof Arts & Sciences had its roof collapse early Sunday, according to D.C Fire and EMS on Twitter.
