What's Up With the Metro: July 1-4

Weekend track work late Friday, July 1 and Saturday, July 2 on Red, Orange and Blue lines.

Metro's efforts to rebuild the rail system will continue this weekend on the Red, Orange and Blue lines.  The work will begin around 10 p.m. Friday, July 1, and continue through closing on Saturday, July 2.  

For the benefit of customers attending Independence Day activities throughout the region, there will be no scheduled track maintenance on Sunday, July 3 or Monday, July 4.

Red Line

  • Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday and continuing all day Saturday through closing, Red Line trains will share one track between the Van Ness-UDC and Friendship Heights stations as Metro replaces rail fasteners.
  • On Friday from 10 p.m. through 2 a.m.,  Red Line trains will share one track between the New York Avenue and Rhode Island Avenue stations as Metro smoothes the surface of the rails and conducts bridge rehabilitation work at near Rhode Island Avenue.
  • On Saturday from 7 a.m. to midnight, Red Line trains will share one track between the Rhode Island Avenue and Fort Totten stations as Metro smoothes the surface of the rails.  Then, from midnight until 3 a.m. (early Sunday morning), Red Line trains will share one track between the Fort Totten and Takoma stations as Metro smoothes the surface of the rails.
  • On Saturday, Red Line trains will depart endpoint terminals about every 20 minutes.  Between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., additional Red Line trains will operate between Van Ness-UDC and New York Avenue, resulting in service about every 10 minutes between these stations.
  • Red Line customers should allow about 20 minutes of additional travel time. 

Orange and Blue Lines

  • Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday and continuing all day Saturday through closing, Orange and Blue Line trains will share one track between Eastern Market and Stadium Armory stations as Metro replaces rail fasteners to provide a smoother ride.
  • On Saturday, Blue and Orange Line trains will depart endpoint terminals about every 20 minutes.
  • Blue and Orange Line customers should allow about 20 minutes of additional travel time.
