The Top 5 Ways to Keep Your Dog Cool This Summer

We may not always realize it, but pets get hot just like humans do. That’s why I thought I’d take a few minutes to share some ways to keep them safe and cool!

1. Let’s get the basics out of the way first.

Your dog needs plenty of water and a shady spot to sit, both outdoors and indoors. Now’s a good time to put out extra water bowls just to be absolutely sure your pet can stay hydrated.

You should also get your dog groomed. Professional grooming is best—you don’t want to shave off or hack off all of your dog’s hair as its part of his natural protection system. However, a dog’s hair shouldn’t be too long either. Grooming your dog will allow you to slather on some sunscreen, which is important as dogs can get sunburns too.

Remember that you should always supervise your dog while he’s outside as well, so that you can watch for signs of heat stroke.

2. Have some wet and wild fun!

Kids like to play in sprinklers—and so do dogs! Why not turn yours on and take your pup for a run through them?

If it’s too hot for that then you might try filling up a doggie pool. These are like kiddie pools, but they are made in the proper shape and size to accommodate a dog. Not all dogs enjoy getting wet, of course, but those that do often want to spend lots and lots of time in their pools. Who could blame them?

3. Change your walk times.

If you’ve been walking your dog in the early afternoon or late morning you’re choosing the hottest times of the day. Instead, think about shifting to the early morning and early evening to catch the coolest possible temperatures. Trust me, the walk will be cooler and less exhausting for you, too.

If your schedule doesn’t make this possible you have some options. For example, you can buy “dog boots,” which will at least protect your dog’s sensitive foot pads from hot pavement. A dog’s feet can get seriously burned when temperatures rise, so this is an important safety measure. In addition, dogs sweat through their foot pads, so you want to keep them as healthy as possible. It may also be a good idea to hire a dog walker or pet sitter who can take your dogs out at optimum times during the summer, just to ensure your pet’s safety.

4. Feed your pet a Popsicle!

Did you know that there are tons of recipes out there for frozen pet treats? Many of them use cheap ingredients that are easily available, like these frozen peanut butter dog treats. You’ll have fun making them, and you’ll have fun watching your dog enjoy them!

Don’t feel like cooking for your pet? Many pets also enjoy plain ice cubes, which serve the same purpose.

5. Get a Cooling Dog Bed

Cooling dog beds are special beds that are great for indoor use, especially if your home doesn’t have air conditioning. Most brands require you to fill the bed with water. Some have gel inserts. Either way, they help to lower your dog’s core body temperature on the hottest days.

Mix it up!

Giving your dog lots of options for staying cool will keep your pet from experiencing distress when the temperature rises. That means both you and your pet will have a safe, happy, and pleasant summer.
