5 Last-Minute Local Graduation Gift Ideas for Modern Guys

With college commencement ceremonies in full swing, here are several options for finding gifts for the modern man in the District.

With a number of university commencement ceremonies taking place this weekend, here are five ideas for a special gift for the graduating man available on or around the streets of Georgetown.

  1. A properly-fitting shirt from Georgetown-based Hugh and Crye: Get the new graduate a shirt that actually fits from District darlings Hugh & Crye.  The company has developed an innovative fit system that gets pretty close to custom, and offers a variety of patterns, stripes and solids. Alternately try Georgetown newcomer Massimo Dutti, which sells moderately priced, European-inspired menswear staples on Wisconsin across from corporate sibling Zara.
  2. A boss new tie from Hugo Boss. At around $100, recent graduates may struggle to afford Hugo Boss' Italian-made ties, which makes them a great gift.  The store at 1517 Wisconsin Ave NW boasts quality customer service and, right now, a pile of bright neckwear options for spring. For a preppier look, Bonobos in Cady's Alley and Brooks Brothers on Wisconsin Ave NW offer plenty of options.
  3. A new look courtesy of David Rios. For the guy who is going through a final round of interviews for a new job, a nice haircut from David Rios at his new Wisconsin Ave. salon may pay dividends, and the shampoo that precedes it ought to help improve his state of mind.
  4. A post-backpack bag from Jack Spade. Jack Spade's store at 1250 Wisconsin Ave NW offers a number of options to upgrade a new graduate's university backpack, including this mill leather davis brief bag for around $400.  Suit Supply's cognac slim portfolio bag is another stylish option.
  5. A knock-em-dead interview suit from Suit Supply.  Netherlands-based Suit Supply set up shop last year in the District, bringing modern takes on classic staples to Georgetown.  Go subtle like this classic navy Napoli cut option or for something a little more adventurous such as this slightly shimmery light grey suit in wool and mohair. For a more personal gift with a great story, you could seek out Georgetown's newest stealth custom tailors, J&C Suiting, run by two Georgetown graduates who are suiting up area students and professionals.
