Bike Challenge: Just How Much Can You Put On a Bike? Lessons from a Cellist.

Road Trip! Summer is prime concert season. Get a load of how one musician--a cellist--chose to hit the road. Hint: it did not include a tour bus.

Yes, you can cart a cello on a bike, without damaging either the cello or the bike. And in this case, the rider came out just fine, too.

Ben Sollee, a musician from Lexington, Kentucky, combined his love of bikes and a wish to tour at a human pace when he launched his "Ditch The Van Tour" last May. Sollee and his bandmate, his tour manager and a documentary filmmaker hit the road carrying a full drum kit, sound gear and merchandise (when's the last time you went to a show and they didn't have cd's and t-shirts for sale?) and Sollee recalls it as a great time.

This year, he's taking a more conventional approach. He's back in the van, and you'll be able to catch him at Arlington's Iota Club and Cafe June 25th and 26th. Tune in to WTOP 103.5 fm on Sunday for the story of the van tour.  And check out more of the audio of his visit to the Glass Enclosed Nerve Center (WTOP's studios for you newbies) on my blog, KateRyanReports.blogspot.com
