Adoption Fees Waived at Humane Society Friday, Saturday

June 21 and 22 are the perfect time to adopt your family's newest pet.

If you have been thinking about adopting a new furry friend, Friday or Saturday is the perfect time to stop by the Washington Humane Society (WHS), which is waiving adoption fees for two days.

In just May the WHS took in more than 800 animals, ranging from dogs and cats to bunnies and other small animals, in need of a new loving home, according to a press release.

"Due to our high intake, coupled with our commitment to save as many lives as possible, we are waiving adoption fees to encourage more people to visit the adoption centers and meet the pet of their dreams," WHS Chief Operating Officer Stephanie Shain said in a press release. "Every adoption not only completes a family, it also creates a space for the next animal in need who comes through our doors.”

Normally, adoption fees are $170 for dogs, $85 for cats and $45 for rabbits.

Animals from WHS are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, tested for heartworm disease and have a permanent ID microchip, according to the press release.

While they are waiving adoption fees, the standard adoption process applies and there is a $15 DC dog license fee required for DC residents adopting dogs.

“There is no better time to adopt than right now. Our adoption centers are filled to the brim with animals who need new homes right away,” said Shain.

The adoption centers are open from noon to 7 p.m. and are located at:

  • 7319 Georgia Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20012
  • 201 New York Avenue, NE Washington, DC 20002
