Cathedral to Premiere New Matthew Shepard Documentary
Judy and Dennis Shepard will mark the 15th anniversary of son's death, honor LGBT youth at the Washington National Cathedral.
The Washington National Cathedral will host the world premiere of Matt Shepard Is a Friend of Mine, a new documentary about Matthew Shepard airing in October, marking 15 years since his death.
“This anniversary is important in the life of our nation and our church. As deeply as Matthew’s murder shocked the world at the time, it was a signal event in turning our shared consciousness toward the tragedy of hate crimes in general and those directed against the LGBT community in particular,” said the Very Rev. Gary Hall, dean of the Cathedral in a press release.

In January the Washington National Cathedral was among the first Episcopal institutions to begin celebrating same-sex marriages.
“Our decision nearly a year ago to perform same-sex weddings, our advocacy for marriage equality in our civic dialogue, and our concern for international LGBT human rights are all of one piece with our commitment to live out the inclusive and expansive love of the God we know in Christ and in community.”
The film will premiere Friday, Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m. A forum with the Shepards and other LGBT advocates will take place Sunday at 10:10 a.m. followed by a service of Holy Eucharist to pray for LGBT youth.
