Area Sees Increase in Robberies and Thefts from Vehicles

Georgetown followed crime trends for much of the Second District for the 30-day period from Oct. 31 to Nov. 29.

Robberies have replaced burglaries as one of the leading crimes in both Georgetown and the entire Second Police District (2D) for the 30-day period from Oct. 31 to Nov. 29 in 2011 compared to 2010. Thefts from vehicles also rose significantly both locally and throughout the district. Burglaries, however, have either decreased or remained the same in all but one of the eight police services areas (PSA) that make up the second district.

There was a 35 percent increase in violent crime, including a 72 percent increase in robberies in 2D; there were a total of 43 robberies this year compared to 25 last year. Georgetown's PSA206 saw a 22 percent increase in violent crime, driven by a 100 percent increase in robberies. There with eight reported robberies this year compared to four last year.

Despite an 86 percent increase in thefts from vehicles, PSA 206 actually had a two percent decrease in overall property crime, partially thanks to the 25 percent decrease in burglaries.
