Updated 3:18 p.m.

Shavonnte Taylor, a 23-year-old DC woman, went into labor Thursday morning while riding a Green Line Metro train in the direction of Greenbelt and ultimately delivered a baby boy on the platform at L'Enfant Plaza

WTOP reports that an off-duty EMT was on the same train as the pregnant woman, and helped her exit the train and deliver the baby.

"Mother and baby were transported to a local hospital. Both appear to be doing fine," according to a tweet sent from the official Metro Transit Police Twitter account Thursday.

The mother and baby were taken to George Washington University hospital. Taylor named her son, Amir Mason. He weighed in at 8 pounds, 5 ounces, according to The Washington Post.
