Burglaries Triple and Violent Crime More Than Doubles in Georgetown

Compared to the same 30-day period in 2010, Georgetown saw a dramatic increase in certain types of crimes in 2011.

Though total crime decreased in Georgetown's Police Service Area 206 (PSA 206), the neighborhood saw a dramatic increase in violent crime and burglaries for the 30-day period from May 23 through June 21 of 2011, when compared to the same time in 2010.

Commander Reese did not provide his usual update and explanation of crime trends at the monthly Citizens Advisory Council meeting last week, because Chief Cathy Lanier was on hand to .

Property crime was up 3 percent overall in the second district in June 2011 compared to June 2010, but violent crime was down 14 percent. The overall crime rate increased by less than 1 percent.

Violent crime increased in PSA 206 by 233 percent over the same time last year and by 100 percent over May 2011. Feeding this increase were seven robberies- one with a gun- and three assaults with a dangerous weapon.

Property crimes, which have plagued the Georgetown neighborhood for the , decreased by 13 percent over the same time last year, but were up by 7 percent compared to May 2011.

Burglaries, which are categorized as property crime, were up 13 percent throughout the second district, but Georgetown had the greatest increase at 350 percent compared to the same time last year. Georgetown experienced a 50 percent increase in burglaries in June 2011 over May 2011.

Though PSA 206 had the greatest percent increase of burglaries throughout the second district, it did not have the greatest number of incidents: PSA 206 experienced 18 burglaries compared to PSA 204's 20.

The increase in burglaries comes despite Commander Reese's hope that there would be a valley in the number of incidents because four burglars have been arrested recently.

One bright spot was a decrease to zero reported incidents of sexual assaults in the entire second district, down 100 percent from the previous year and down 200 percent from the previous month.
