Construction Worker Dies After Hit By Parked Trailer on Parkway

An out of control car caused the accident, police said.

A construction worker was pronounced dead early Thursday morning after being hit by a trailer attached to a parked car, police said.

Travis Jackson, a 34-year-old Alexandria man, was standing by a parked car on Suitland Parkway Southeast when around 11:25 p.m. a woman driving a 2002 BMW X5 lost control of the vehicle while heading eastbound on the parkway, police said.

The driver "struck a parked vehicle and a portable light trailer, which was attached to the vehicle," police said.

The trailer rotated and hit Jackson. He died on the scene and was pronounced dead at the D.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, police said.

The BMW driver was brought to a district hospital where she received treatment before being released, police said.

The District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department's Major Crash Unit is investigating further.

What is the recourse for the criminally negligent driver? Losing control is no excuse for killing someone. Incompetent drivers should suffer jail time and lose their license.
