D.C. National Guard Ready for Hurricane Sandy, State of Emergency

The D.C. National Guard has 150 soldiers and airmen prepared to respond to storm damage throughout the District of Columbia, as part of Mayor Vincent Gray's emergency decree for the District.

"The District of Columbia National Guard is taking necessary precautions to ensure that we can provide timely effective responses coordinated with other local and federal agencies in the aftermath of this terrible storm, " said Maj. Gen. Errol R. Schwartz, Commanding General, District of Columbia National Guard, in a press release. "These are the kind of events we train for every day. We are truly always ready, always there for the citizens of the District of Columbia."

Most recently the D.C. National Guard has responded to the derecho, Hurricane Irene and the "Snowpocolypse" blizzard.

“Let me be clear: this storm is unique, large, dangerous and unlike anything our region has experienced in a very long time,” said Gray in a prepared statement asking for President Obama's approval of a Presidential Disaster Declaration.

President Barack Obama signed the declaration Sunday, giving DC residents and officials access to resources from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and other federal resources for the duration of the storm and its aftermath.
