At 12:25 p.m. Sunday, D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Pete Piringer reported that emergency rescue boats have been launched in the Potomac River near the Georgetown waterfront and are searching for a person whose kayak reportedly overturned in the vicinity of Thompson Boat Center, at 2900 Virginia Ave. NW, or The Boat House at Fletcher's Cover, at 4940 Canal Rd. NW.

Piringer said the department has received conflicting reports about where the kayaker overturned. Rescue boats began their search at about 12:05 p.m. No one has yet been recovered from the water.

The river's currents can be dangerous, Piringer said.

"It looks calm, but the currents are strong all the time," he said. "I’m not sure it’s anything too extreme today. It’s always potentially dangerous depending on your skill level."

Emergency personnel will continue the search until they feel they have done due diligence, Piringer said.
