Elderly Woman Sustains Minor Injuries in Georgetown Condo Fire

An apartment on the third floor of the Gateway Georgetown condominium complex caught fire early Thursday morning.

Hundreds of residents of the Gateway Georgetown Condominiums evacuated the 7-story building early Thursday morning after an apartment on the third floor caught fire.

Pete Piringer, a spokesman for the District of Columbia Fire and EMS Department, said that at about 1:30 a.m the "fire was ignited by improperly discarded smoking materials and the area of origin was a couch."

The damage is estimated at $60,000. One elderly female occupant was transported to the hospital for minor injuries.
