Former N.Y. Deputy Mayor Arrested in Georgetown in July

Former N.Y. Deputy Mayor Stephen Goldsmith resigned from his position in Mayor Michael Bloomberg's administration in July because of his arrest in Georgetown for simple assault after an altercation with his wife. When Goldsmith resigned in August, neither he nor Bloomberg mentioned the arrest as the reason for his abrupt departure.

Goldsmith had served 14 months in the administration as the Deputy Mayor for Operations, splitting his time between New York and Washington, D.C. according to the New York Times.

In a statement released at the time of his departure, Goldsmith said he hoped to return to academia and the pursue a position in the financial sector. “The change will provide me, at age 64, with more flexibility for me and my family and a secure foundation for our future,” he said in the statement.

But the New York Post obtained an incident report from the arrest, which paints a different picture. In the report Barbara Goldsmith said she and her husband were having a verbal altercation when he pushed her and then smashed a phone when she threatened to call police. She was later able to call police and her her husband was arrested at that time.

In a statement released Thursday, Mrs. Goldsmith said that the incident was misconstrued and that the police report contained factual errors.

"There was no crime committed by Stephen or myself; there was no violence nor any physical harm...The has never been any kind of domestic assault or violence in our marriage," she said in the statement.

She also said that DC law required an arrest, but that she had strongly objected to it.

Mr. Goldsmith said he decided to resign to avoid being a "distraction" to the Bloomberg administration.
