Georgetown Armored Car Robbery was Part of a Spike in 2010

A year later the armored car robbery on Sept. 30, 2010 on Wisconsin Avenue remains unsolved.

The on Wisconsin Avenue on Sept. 30, 2010 was the last in a spike for the 2010 fiscal year, making the Washington, D.C. region the top in the country for such crimes.

The Georgetown incident involved armed, masked men robbing an armored car parked across from the and escaping with money.

A year later, the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) Washington Field Office (WFO) is still looking for two suspects wanted in that robbery and likely a third who drove a vehicle away from the scene, according to Lindsay Godwin, a public affairs specialist at WFO.

In FY 2010 (Oct. 1, 2010 through Sept. 30, 2010), the FBI recorded nine armored car robberies in WFO's coverage area, which includes the District and Northern Va. According to the available FBI Bank Crime Statistics, the law enforcement agency received a total of 34 reported armored car robberies in that same period for the entire country; D.C. accounted for 26 percent of reported incidents.

After the spike last year, 2011 has seen a decrease in armored car incidents, according to Godwin. So far in FY2011, the region has had four armored car robberies. Between Oct. 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011, the FBI has recorded 36 armored car robberies country-wide.

Overall, for the FBI Washington Field Office, armored car robberies are down from fiscal year 2010:

  • FY 2011– 4 armored car robberies (as of 9/12/2011)
  • FY 2010 – 9 armored car robberies (8 in DC; 1 in VA)
  • FY 2009 – 2 armored car robberies (2 in DC; 0 in VA)
  • FY 2008 – 3 armored car robberies (2 in DC; 1 in VA)

Overall, for the FBI Washington Field Office, bank robberies are steady from fiscal year 2010:

  • FY 2011 – 71 bank robberies (17 in DC; 54 in VA) (as of9/12/2011)
  • FY 2010 – 70 bank robberies (36 in DC; 43 in VA)
  • FY 2009 – 81 bank robberies (25 in DC; 56 in VA)
  • FY 2008 – 70 bank robberies (28 in DC; 42 in VA)

As for the Georgetown armored car robbery, the FBI is seeking tips and information from the public.
