Georgetown Property Crimes Up 100 Percent Over Last Year

Georgetown's Police Service Area (PSA206) has seen an uptick in property crimes including thefts and burglaries.

Georgetown's Police Service Area (PSA206) has experienced a 100 percent increase in property crimes over the same time last year, according to Lt. John Hedgecock. Last year PSA206 had 24 reported incidents; this year there were 49.

Hedgecock said the entire Second District has been "hit hard by property crime."

Hedgecock said the department has an "enhanced enforcement and enhanced presence" that the Second District commander put in place.

The burglaries are mostly "occurring during the day, forcing entry when residents are not home," he added.

The good news is that violent crimes such as robberies and aggravated assaults  are down by 50 percent this year compared to last year.

At the Advisory Neighborhood Commission meeting Tuesday, Commissioner Ed Solomon asked for an update on the investigation into the .

Hedgecock said: "We have progressed. I can’t speak too much because I don't want to compromise the investigation." He added that the incident "was not a random act, there was an intended target within."

Neighbors are encouraged to call 911 about any suspicious behavior and to lock their doors.
