Police Identify Man Killed In Single-Car Accident on I-295

The fatal crash detoured traffic for about six hours Tuesday morning.

A fatal accident involving one car and its driver detoured early commuter traffic on I-295 for about six hours Tuesday morning, said the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department

According to police, the man killed was Anthony Lawrence Emerson, 28, from Glenndale, Md. He died around midnight in a D.C. hospital on Tuesday.

He was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Camaro at a "high rate of speed" before he lost control and drove into the trees along the Anacostia Freeway, finally flipping the car, police said.

Police alerted the public about the accident around 5 a.m. when commute traffic started to back up, advising drivers to avoid the blocked area near East Capitol Street.

Police cleared the accident and reopened the freeway around 7:45 a.m, a D.C. alert said.
