MPD To Activate New Street Enforcement Cameras

Find out where existing speed and red light cameras are in Georgetown, as well as a new intersection speed camera at 25th Street NW and K Street NW.

The Metropolitan Police Department added more street enforcement cameras at intersections, stop signs and cross walks, and will turn them on this weekend, the department said in a Friday statement.

The new cameras and detection boxes will be activated on Nov.23 and will only issue warning tickets for the week, until Nov.29. But starting Nov.30, drivers caught on automated camera breaking the law will be fined, and getting stuck in an intersection will cost $50, the statement said.

The new cameras are intended to prevent gridlock and speeding, enforce stop signs and crosswalks and prevent over-weight vehicles from driving on unequipped roads, the statement said.
