Muth Deemed Not Competent for Trial, Diagnosed with Delusion Disorder

Georgetown murder suspect Albrecht Muth will remain under treatment at St. Elizabeths Hospital.

Doctors have determined that Albrecht Muth, charged with first-degree murder in the death of his wife Viola Drath, is not competent to stand trial. In a letter to the court Monday, doctors at St. Elizabeths wrote that Muth has been diagnosed with Delusional Disorder, Persecutory Type and Schizotypal Personality Disorder.

Muth has been under continued evaluation and treatment at St. Elizabeths since his last appearance in court, March 14.

The report states that Muth expressed a general understanding of the proceedings, but that doctors doubt his ability to "rationally understand the proceedings against him or consult with is attorneys to a reasonable degree of rational understanding."

With continued inpatient treatment, "There is a probability that he will attain competence or make progress toward that goal with an additional period of time" the report states.

In March, the D.C. Department of Mental Health sought more time to evaluate whether Muth presented a "genuine psychosis" or "feigned psychological processes in order to avoid prosecution."

The April report states that Muth is not "feigning" any cognitive impairment.

Muth's mental observation hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, when the court will also take up his felony arraignment.
