Neighbors Thank Second District Police with Luncheon

To celebrate National Law Enforcement Officers' Week, the second district community gave time and money for all-day luncheon.

As you walked into the Second District Police Station on Idaho Avenue Thursday, the smell of marinara and lasagna filled the air. The generally quiet station, had a different kind of silence: the quiet that comes when people happily dive into a good meal. The Citizens Advisory Council for the Second District hosted a luncheon to celebrate  National Law Enforcement Officers’ Week.

Neighbors donated some $700 and tens of dozens of cupcakes made with more care than any you would find at a boutique venue on M Street, all to properly thank the law enforcement officers who keep the neighborhoods they patrol safe.

"It's nice to know some people care," said Office Martinez.

Martinez said maybe some people think it's "just a stop sign," but that the ticket is his reminder that there are reasons for the rules. He is protecting the neighborhood kids who need to cross at that stop sign, he said.

Martinez also said the people in the second district care about their neighborhood and always stop him to see what is going on if he parks on their street to fill out a report. He said often he can not even make it through a full report without having to move on because of the curious nature of neighbors.

Officers sat together, swapping stories from the week and preparing to head out to their shift. As one headed out the door she said to Martinez, "see you on the street."

He wrapped up his meal, shook my hand and thanked the volunteers for their contributions.

According to Nolan, the generosity of neighbors meant there was enough food to feed officers in the Third District too.

"Many came over this afternoon to eat.  The feasting is still going on at 2D with the midnight shift," said Nolan in an email.
