Updated: U.S. Park Police Officer Dies While Responding to Key Bridge Jumper

U.S. Park Police, MPD and D.C. Fire and EMS responded to reports of a man found at the base of the Key Bridge Friday around 5 p.m.

U.S. Park Police Sergeant Michael Boehm collapsed while responding to a possible Key Bridge jumper and later died at Georgetown University Hospital Friday. D.C. Fire and EMS transported the man, who was found on the C&O Canal at 34th Street, NW, as a priority one to a nearby hospital and where he was later pronounced dead.

Sgt. Boehm was assisting with the investigation of the initial report of a man on the C&O Canal when he collapsed.

According to a press release from the United States Park Police, Fire and EMS personnel at that scene responded immediately to Sgt. Boehm, transporting him to where the medical staff continued treatment, but were unable to revive him.

Sergeant Boehm is survived by his wife Corrina and son Christopher, according to the news release.

Officials have not released the identity of the man who was found on the canal, but are currently proceeding with a death investigation and autopsy.

Update 8:23 p.m.

Traffic was initially blocked coming from both Virginia and D.C. across the Key Bridge, but lanes are now open for vehicles. Prospect Street at 34th  and 35th Streets were also closed at times, but have reopened. Police are still preventing pedestrians from crossing the bridge, however.

According to a source, the man's body was found by two joggers.

Police are investigating a possible jumper at the Key Bridge.

Police received a call just after 5 p.m. Friday about a man found at the base of the bridge.

Police have closed several lanes of the Key Bridge intermittently as they investigate. The man was transferred to a nearby hospital as a priority one patient.

MPD and U.S. Park Police are continuing to gather information. Patch will provide updates as information is made available.
