Police: Second District Sees Increase in Robberies, Sexual Assaults

Despite increases in certain areas, overall crime is down 8 percent year to date.

The Metropolitan Police Department's Second District saw an 8 percent increase in robberies over the same time period last year and five reported sexual assaults compared to zero during the same one-month period in 2011.

But Second District (2D) Commander Michael Reese told the that year-to-date 2D has seen an 8 percent overall decrease in crime.

Many of the robberies were taking place in the Ward 2's "club areas" or places with late-night activity and bars, Reese noted.

Police records provided at the CAC meeting show that half of the eight police service areas that comprise 2D had a reported sexual assault.

Reese said he was unable to comment on any of the sexual assault incidents.
