'Popping' AC Unit Prompts Explosion Investigation at Intermix

No one was injured and there was no serious structural damage at 3300 M Street.

DC Fire and EMS responded to reports of an explosion at Intermix, 3300 M St. NW, in Georgetown just before 2 p.m. Tuesday. Units have since determined that the problem was a slight freon leak in an air conditioning unit.

There were no structural problems or injuries reported and maintenance to the building is now working on the problem.

Batallion Chief Brian Lee told Patch that a call came in at 1:56 p.m. about an explosion because an air conditioning unit made a "bursting" and "popping" sound.

"There were no big explosions," explained Lee.

Patch contacted Intermix to learn more about the incident. Though a sales clerk did confirm that the incident had happened at the store, she was not authorized to speak with the media and a manager was not immediately available.
