Protect Your Bike: WMATA Launches Free Registration Program

Metro Transit Police say registering a bicycle is the best way to help authorities recover it in the event it is stolen.

The Metro Transit Police Department is launching a free online bike registration program for riders who park their bicycles at Metro facilities.

The new program is aimed at helping reduce bicycle theft at Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority facilities.

Cycle commuters can sign-up and register on the WMATA website. To register, riders will need to enter their bike’s make, model, serial number, color and frame size.

“Registering your bike is the best way to help police recover it in the event that it is lost or stolen,” Metro Transit Police Chief Ron Pavlik said in a press release. “I encourage anyone who parks their bike at a Metro facility to take advantage of this new free service.”

MTP is also encouraging cyclists to use U-lock devices to better protect their bicycles at Metro stations. U-locks are sturdier than conventional chain locks and are more difficult for a thief to overcome, according to the release.
